I had no idea that Slovenia has become such a European food mecca! I can’t wait to eat it all! It’s said that Slovenia food has a blend of influences from Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Turkey and even Russian. To me that sounds like it could be a lot of potatoes, pasta, and pizza. With all the flavors from each of those countries, it could be a delicious combo, I’ll have to wait and see.
What I do look forward to is trying all the wine that I’ve heard so much about! There are a lot of articles written about ancient vineyards where I hope to try out the authentic Slovenian varietals. There are 3 distinct wine regions in Slovenia, Podravje – known for it’s aromatic dry whites (including the country’s oldest vine at 450 years old and oldest sparkling vineyard dating back to 1852), Posavje – where the unusual Cviček is made. A blend of 70% red and 30% white, these are the grapes that survived all that has been thrown at them. Lastly Primorje is the largest wine producing region in Slovenia specializing in the regional classic white wine, Rebula. Hopefully I can experience at least one of those regions!

Slovenia is roughly the size of New Jersey with a population of only around 2 million. I’ve heard people boast about the friendliness of the locals and look forward to eating, drinking and hearing stories from them! There is just so much to do in Slovenia, check out some photos of their stunning natural beauty!
Some other interesting tidbits about Slovenia:
- Roughly 60% of the country is covered in lush, green forests. Perfect for hiking all those mountains!
- The country has a generous population of bears roaming the mountains. It is still legal to serve bear in restaurants. You can bet I will not be partaking in any bear dishes in my future, no matter how much cheese is on it!
- There are about 500 castles throughout Slovenia including the famous Predjama, the incredible castle built into a cave.
- Slovenians are expert beekeepers and honey makers! I love honey!
